Satoshi Nakamoto wrote Bitcoin's original code in C++, releasing version 0.1 on January 9, 2009. The codebase was remarkably clean for a solo project and demonstrated deep knowledge of cryptography, distributed systems, and economics. Today, Bitcoin Core (the reference implementation) is maintained by hundreds of open-source contributors and has been reviewed more thoroughly than almost any software in history.
